Kathryn Conrad, age 100, of Honey Brook Township, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at the Tel Hai Retirement Community. Kathryn was the daughter of the late John A. Kern and Edith (Yoder) Kern. She was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Kern, who died in 1959. Kathryn was the wife of the late John L. Conrad, who passed away in 2014. They celebrated 61 years of marriage in November 2013.
Kathryn was a graduate of the Honey Brook High School, Class of 1941 and a graduate of the Lancaster Business College. Her secretarial career spanned 44 years. Upon graduation, she was a secretary to Sarah Reinhart, RN, Director of Nursing at Lancaster General Hospital. Later she was a secretary to Henry Y. Shaub, Architect. For twenty-five years she was a secretary to Dr. Grant W. Bamberger until his retirement. Kathryn then was a secretary at the First National Bank of Honey Brook from where she retired in December 1989.
Kathryn lived her entire life on the farm where she was born. In 2007, she preserved this farm – the 215th farm to be preserved in Chester County. During WW II, she was a Civil Defense Volunteer.
Kathryn had many and varied interests. She was an avid reader, especially of history and biographies. She was interested in family genealogy. Cooking and baking were another interest. Gardening and bird watching were also among her interests, but most of all, she loved her collie dogs, Rusty, Julie and Gracie- her Golden Retrievers. Another interest was letter writing. She had “Pen Pals” in Germany and Japan for more than 50 years. All of her pen pals visited her on the farm in Honey Brook.
Kathryn was a devoted member of the Honey Brook United Methodist Church since 1934. During those years, she was a Sunday school teacher for 27 years, served on Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Council on Ministries and Trustees, where she was the first female member of that Board. Kathryn also served as Associate Editor and later Editor of the church newsletter for several years.
Kathryn loved people and had concern for those in need. She was coordinator for the World Vision Love Loaf Program for more than twenty years at her church. In her church, she was known as “The Love Loaf Lady”.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 11 AM from The Labs Funeral Home, Inc., 141 Pequea Ave., Honey Brook, Pa., with Pastor Ray Voran officiating. Interment will follow at the Honey Brook Methodist Cemetery. A calling hour will be held one hour prior to the service.
