Barry L Hinkle

Barry L. Hinkle, 83 years old, of Honey Brook, formerly of Malvern, PA, passed away at the Meadows Healthcare Center at the Tel Hai Retirement Community, on Saturday, July 20, 2024 while under the loving care of hospice and his family.

He was born on Wednesday, May 28, 1941 in Columbia, PA.  Barry was the son of the late LaVerne and Margaret (Pleam) Hinkle.  He was the beloved husband of Brenda J. (Gettle) Hinkle, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.

Barry graduated from Penn State University in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and began his career with PECO, where he worked for 30 years. He began working as a Plant Engineer at the Conowingo Hydro Electric Plant in Maryland, was instrumental in the start-up of the Muddy Run Pumped Storage Facility, and retired as a Superintendent of the Turbine Generator section of Nuclear Maintenance in Chesterbrook, PA.

While living in Maryland, Barry was an active member of the Masonic Lodge where he held many offices and became Past Master of Stephenson Lodge #135 F.&A.M.  He also served as Worthy Patron of Darlington Chapter #105, Order of the Eastern Star, while his wife, Brenda, served as Worthy Matron.

Barry began his Lions career in 1964 in the Darlington, MD. Lions Club.  Upon moving to Pennsylvania, he transferred to the Frazer Lions and subsequently to the Paoli-Berwyn-Malvern Lions club.  He was active in all clubs and held many leadership positions including District Governor of District 14-P (which included Berks and Chester counties) from 1987-1988.

Barry was recently recognized as an active member of the International Association of Lions Club with 60 years of membership.

Barry served on the Board of the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley and served as President from 1999-2000.  This organization provides corneal transplants to people with eye diseases.

Barry was a member of the Living God Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed boating on the Susquehanna River, playing golf, wood working, and jigsaw puzzles. He especially enjoyed activities with his grandsons and was looking forward to spending time with a new great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his brother, LaVerne Hinkle.

Barry is survived in addition to his wife by three daughters, Kristine Pommerer, Carol Mead, and Gail Pommerer, and a brother, Thomas Hinkle and sister, Diane Denison.   There are four grandsons and a great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 11 AM at Tel Hai Chapel, 1200 Tel Hai Circle, Honey Brook, Pa. with Pastor Tim Herr officiating.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel.  Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Philadelphia Memorial Park.
