Jewel Rowland

1940-2022

Jewel Zaleski Rowland, of Honey Brook, PA, and formerly of West Chester and Kennett Square, PA, passed away on April 24, 2022.  Jewel was the beloved wife of Fred Rowland (d. 2018), to whom she was married for 51 years.  She is survived by her three children:  Noreen Davish (Patrick), Siobhan Marussich (Mark), and Steve Rowland (Therese).  She was delighted by her grandchildren:  Sophie and Josephine Davish, Catherine Marussich, and Alvar Rowland.  She loved us all.  Jewel was born in Carbondale, PA in 1940 to Anthony and Helen Zaleski, joining her brother John and sister Mary Luke, IHM.  She graduated valedictorian of her class, earning a full scholarship to Marywood College which she declined to study nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale.  When she married Fred, who proposed on their very first blind date, she ended her nursing career to focus on raising her children. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker and supported us kids in all we did.  When Jewel saw a need, she addressed it.  She served as an ELL tutor in Kennett Square, volunteered in her kids’ classrooms and at her church, kept in contact with friends and family, and babysat her grandchildren, even travelling abroad to greet her newborn grandson.  Jewel loved to knit and do needlepoint, leaving us with gifts that we will treasure always.  She had elegant handwriting that expressed her sharp mind and warm heart. Jewel also loved her dogs, taking them on evening walks, and had many beloved canines during her lifetime.  She was a great mom and a good friend and never let her physical sufferings prevent her from living her life and supporting those around her. A private graveside service will be held for immediate family only.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Tel Hai Care Assurance Fund, P.O. Box 190, Honey Brook, PA  19344-0190.  Arrangements by The Labs Funeral Home, Inc., of Honey Brook, PA.  For additional information or online condolences, please visit www.thelabsfh.com .
